How to Price a 3D Print Without Guessing

A practical pricing framework covering filament, machine time, labor, failed-print risk, finishing, packaging, and fulfillment.

A fair 3D-print quote starts with the material, but filament is only one part of the job. A useful price also accounts for the time the printer is occupied, the hands-on work required before and after printing, the possibility of a failed run, and the cost of getting the finished part to the customer.

Begin with the slicer estimate. Record the projected filament weight and print duration using the same printer, nozzle, layer height, supports, and material profile you intend to use. An estimate made with a different setup is not a dependable production quote.

Convert filament weight into material cost using the actual price paid per kilogram. Add a modest allowance for purge material, supports, calibration, and leftovers that cannot be sold as part of the job. Multicolor work generally creates more waste than a single-color print.

Machine time covers wear, electricity, maintenance, and the fact that the printer cannot make another order while this job is running. It should be separate from hands-on labor. Labor includes file inspection, slicing, setup, support removal, cleanup, assembly, packaging, and customer communication.

Failure risk should reflect the model and process. Tall narrow parts, large supported surfaces, unfamiliar files, and long prints carry more risk than a short proven model. The goal is not to punish the customer. It is to avoid pretending every attempt succeeds on the first try.

Finally, add packaging, payment fees, shipping or pickup handling, and a sustainable markup. Show customers what affects the quote in plain language. A transparent price is easier to trust and easier to adjust when the material, finish, quantity, or deadline changes.

Should every model use the same hourly rate?

Use a consistent baseline, then adjust documented risk and labor instead of inventing a different price for every customer.
